Joseph-Benoît Suvée ‚The Invention of Drawing‘ 1791 #detail of another example with the theme #theinventionofdrawing which became very #popular in the late 18thcentury. The #belgian #painter born in #Bruges trained and worked in #France adopting #neoclassicism. The #artist captures the #moment of #farewell of the two #lovers with #dibutade #tracing the #outline of his #shadow to remind her of his #likeness before he departs on a long #journey. The #painting is in Bruges at the #groenigenmuseum and the #drawing @gettymuseum

Jean Pierre Norblin de la Gourdaine ‚The Invention of Drawing‘ 1773 the #etching by 18thcentury #french #artist #norblin illustrates the #ancient #myth of the #corinthian #maiden #dibutade tracing the shadow of her #lover before he departs on a long journey. Norblin sets the #classical scene popular in the late 18th century in #Rembrandt #style and #costume as he was a great admirer of the #Dutch artist. #inventionofdrawing #printmaker #print #lovers #departure

Anthony Gormley ‚The Origin of Drawing VIII‘ 2008 a #contemporary #drawing by #antonygormley illustrating the origin of drawing which according to the #ancient #roman #writer #Pliny began with the #outlining of a #shadow. It is not easy to add contemporary works to the collection but this one fits perfectly with many earlier depictions of the theme in the #katrinbellingercollection bought @christiesinc originally from @thaddaeusropac #drawn in #carbon and #casein

Thomas Gainsborough ‘Self Portrait in a Wooded Landscape’ 1754-1758 #gainsgorough cut out the #drawing of his figure and pasted it carefully into a #landscape invoking his ideal of free #creativity. Driven by the high demand for his #portraitpainting he had little time to follow his #passion of #landscapepainting. You have only until tomorrow to see the #drawing in the #exhibition ‘Gainsborough’s Family Album’ @nationalportraitgallery before it goes back into a box @britishmuseum #britishmuseum #printsanddrawings #nationalportraitgallery #gainsboroughsfamilyalbum #silouette #artistatwork #artistdrawing #portefolio #portecrayon #18thcentury #britishart

This beautiful #painting as well many others of his #daughters and #family are in the wonderful #exhibition ‚Gainsborough‘s Family Album‘ @nationalportraitgallery until Sunday. #nationalportraitgallery #GainsboroughsFamilyAlbum #sisters #siblings #familyportraits #18thcentury #britishart

Edward Burne-Jones ‚The unwelcome Critic‘ 1880‘s another #caricature by #BurneJones from a group of the so called #fatlady #drawings @britishmuseum where most of his caricatures are kept. Here a lady of considerable weight not only seems to crush the #artist physically but also offers him unwelcome advice peering through a pair of #lorgnette #glasses. #britishmuseum #printsanddrawings #hiddenhumorist #theartistatwork #theartistdisturbed

Edward Burne-Jones ‚The Artist working in his Studio‘ 1870s I was delighted to see #BurneJones #caricatures in the #exhibition on the #artist @tate #tatebritain. They are a wonderful contrast to his #romantic #dreamlike often #melancholy work. In these #drawings he reveals a lighter side with a great #senseofhumour often at his own expense. #artistatwork #studiolife #studioclutter #creativeclutter #caricature #worksonpaper #preraphaelite #painter

Achille Devéria ‚Raphael drawing the Fornarina‘ much as I would like to own the #ingres in the previous post it is unlikely despite there being 6 versions. I do have a #watercolour by #devéria in my #collection of the same #subject. It is a very different take on the #popular theme of #raphael and #lafornarina shown in this historicising scene. To help the viewer to identify the subject he has the #model in an identical pose to the #famous #painting and the word #raphael is written in large letters on the #sketchbook the #artist is busy drawing in. #katrinbellingercollection #french #19thcentury

Jean-Auguste- Dominique Ingres ‚Raphael and the Fornarina‘ 1814 the #painter #ingres had planned a series of #paintings documenting the life of his #idol #raphael in line with the #popular 19thcentury #practise to depict scenes from the life of #famous #artists. The #project was never completed but Ingres painted several version of this subject of Raphael with his alleged #mistress #lafornarina #thelittlebaker who‘s #famous #portrait he is #painting. @harvardartmuseums #theartistsatwork #theartistdistracted #historicism

John Sergeant ‚The Corner of a Studio‘ 1991 using #watercolour rather then #drawing #johnsergeant was a subtle and beautiful #colourist. This large sheet shows a a corner of his #studio with the casual #clutter of his #drawing and #watercolour #utensils, a #drawingportfolio and the back of a watercolourboard. John Sergeant ‚The Artist‘s Painting Box‘ 2005 a typical #drawing by #johnsergeant using a #velvety #black #chalk on #ingrespaper to depicts his #paintbox. He did not like using colour but excelled at modelling #light and #shade in his favourite #medium #blackchalk. #Sergeants use of #contecrayon reminds me of other brilliant #draughtsmen like #seurat and #menzel who also liked to draw his #artistmaterials .

Pierre Le Tan ‘Self Portrait ‘ 2018 I still like to #commission #artists and this wonderful #selfportrat by #pierreletan is a recent example. He told me that he had not attempted a Self-Portrait before and the he found it hard to draw himself in a #mirror. The result is a great #success and he resolved the challenge of #drawing his working right hand by hiding it behind his #drawingboard. I have always admired #letan ’s work from his #covers for the #newyorkermagazine to his #posterdesign for the #salondudessin , his recent #exhibition @tristanhoare #tristanhoaregallery and his #collaboration with his daughter’s brilliant #fashionbrand #olympialetan @olympialetan

John Sergeant ‘Reflections over a Portrait of Hubert Robert’ 1994 another #Selfportrait I commissioned from #johnsergeant again cleverly disguises more then it reveals. His #reflection merges with a #portrait of #hubertrobert by Jean Baptiste Isabey #isabey #jeanbaptisteisabey in my #collection. The #drawing is propped up on a #catalogue I #published in 1992 on #drawings related to #sculpture.
