A note on Artists at Work at the Courtauld Gallery

The exhibition Artists at Work at the Courtauld Gallery featuring some of the drawings from my collection selected by the artist Deanna Petherbridge now has only another couple of weeks to run before it closes on July 15th. I am very happy that this small show has had a steady flow of visitors and a number of favourable reviews. It proves that the space dedicated to the display of drawings at the Courtauld is by now well established and helps to keep works on paper visible.

Mark Rothko ‘Thru the Window’ 1938/39 this small #oil on #gesso board is an early #selfportrait #painting by #MarkRothko which was spotted by @johannesfhenkel in the exhibition on the #artist @mfaboston #mfaboston. The prominently placed #red #easel and #canvas placed on the right of the composition recall the #Rembrandt in my previous post. He includes another #symbol of his trade a clothed #artistmodel #surreally floating in the #studio space.

Rembrandt van Rijn ‘Artist in his Studio’ 1628 a #small #early #Rembrandt #masterpiece in the #collection of the #mfaboston @mfaboston. In contrast to this small #panel the painting depicted is large and not for us to see. Rather than showing the #artist in action #painting he captures the moment of #contemplation and #decisionmaking. The #Studio does not feature the usual clutter just a couple of #palettes on the wall behind the artist.#artistatwork #artiststudio #chiaroscuro #lightandshadow #dutch #17thcentury #dutchgoldenage

Johann Christian Reinhart ‘In Villa Mecenate’ 1793 this #famous #etching by #johannchristianreinhart shows a #waterfall inside the domed #ruins of the #VillaMecenate with a #painter #drawing the scene and a #hunter with a rifle standing next to him. The two small #figures add a sense of #monumental scale to the #image. Reinhart lived and worked in #Rome where with #fellowartist #JosephAntonKoch he established #German #romantic #classical #landscapepainting.

Johann Christian Reinhart ‘An artist sketching near Leipzig’ 1785/86 an early work by #JohannChristianReinhart before he moves to Rome where he remains for the rest of his life. The #watercolor shows the landscape the #artist sees as well as the him seated on the ground with the #sketchpad on his knees. #Reinhart is much influenced by his friend #FriedrichSchiller ‘s theories on art as well as the the #ideals of the #ageofenlightenment of the #artist’s connection to #nature which is so well #illustrated in this #drawing. #german #19thcentury #romantic #Aufklärung #Aquarell #enplainair

Edouard Joseph Dantan ‘Sculptors working on a plaster cast of the dog Rio’ 1896 after the #artist #EdouardDantan won a medal exhibiting his #painting ‘A Coin d’Atelier’ at the #Salon of 1880 #studiointeriors became a favoured and successful subject of his. Raoul-Marie Baligant ‘Modelling the Sketch’ 1901 the #Skulptor is modelling a #sketch in #plaster which gives the #artist #Baligant an opportunity to show off his #skill rendering #shadesofwhite . The #studio is covered in fine white plaster dust and the artist as well as his young #studioassistant are wearing white coats for protection. #RaoulMarieBaligant captures the quiet concentration in the #artistsstudio with the #sculptor working on his plaster sketch and the boy at his feet busy mixing fresh plaster for him in a large bowl. #artistatwork #calmconcentration #monocrome

Paul Mathey ‘ Portrait of Georges Clairin’ the #painter and #illustrator #georgesclairin is shown in front of a large #squared #canvas or #carton with several smaller #drawings attached for #reference. It could be the #underdrawing for a painting or a #design for one of the many #ceiling #frescoes he #painted like the one in the #foyer of the #operagarnier. The props in the corner could be a reference to him being an #orientalist #painter who travelled to #northafrica frequently particularly #morocco and #egypt. It is the only #touch of #colour in a largely #monochrome painting showing #paulmathey ’s skill in working with #shadesofwhite.

Francois Bonvin ‘Sophie Unternährer painting at the Easel‘ 1848 this beautiful #painting by #FrancoisBonvin which has been considered lost has now resurfaced @londonartweek_ #londonartweek where it is exhibited at Florian Härb and Martin Grässle. The #drawing for it is in the #katrinbellingercollection. Both depict the sister of Bonvin‘s #lover Eleonore better known as Nonore. They belonged to a circle of #friends called the ‚#group de la #boheme‘ which included amongst others the #painter #Courbet. The #lighting and #rendering of the painting‘s #interior reflect #Bonvin‘s #admiration for #Dutch #17thcentury masters which he studied regularly @museelouvre

Deanna Petherbridge ‚Self Portrait‘ 2001 the #artist #deannapetherbridge made a #selection from my #collection the #katrinbellingercollection which is on #exhibition @courtauld. The speech she made at the opening is now available in a blog on our website – see link in Bio. The ‚book head‘ is probably a reference to #Petherbridge #magnumopus ’The Primacy of Drawing‘ which took her 20 years to write. #primacyofdrawing

Tizian ‘Portrait of Giulio Romano‘ 1536-1540 the two #artists met at the #Gonzaga #court in #Mantua where both worked for #FedericoGonzaga. The #architectural #plan he #holds is not of #PalazzoTe where it now hangs but for a #structure that was never built. I first saw this #painting years ago in the #philippines in the #Marcos #collection and subsequently on the #artmarket. I am glad it made its way back to #Italy a testament to two great
#artistfriends working in #mantova.

Hans Holbein the Elder ‘Self Portrait‘ 1516 It was a treat to see this #delicate #drawing in #silverpoint and #redchalk at the #chateaudechantilly as their #collection can not be lent. It’s worth a trip to see their #extraordinary #drawingscollection and the #curator #MathieuDeldique thankfully pulled out #treasures for us by #Michelangelo #Dürer #Clouet and this #Holbein. The immediacy and delicate #rendering of the drawing by #hansholbeintheelder anticipates the work of his son #hansholbeintheyounger .
